Ms. Alba Balletbó Canals

Project Manager

BIO

Alba obtained her Bachelor in Biotechnology from the Universitat Autònoma (UAB) de Barcelona in 2018. She joined the group of Sensors and Biosensors at the UAB to conduct her BSc thesis aimed at detecting dopamine in biological systems using a graphene-modified electrode and artificial neural networks. In 2021, she completed her Masters degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology with a minor in Nanotechnology at Wageningen University and Research (WUR), The Netherlands. Her major thesis aimed at the detection of lectins via the flocculation of ternary supramolecular quantum-dot networks. She also did a minor thesis focused on the programming of a kill switch for cell death in bacteria. At the same time, her thesis was part of a bigger project and competed in the international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition, where she and the team were awarded 1st Runner-Up and best Food and Nutrition project.
She started her professional career as a biotechnologist at SkylineDx, a biotech startup headquartered in Rotterdam, aimed at developing genomic diagnostic testing. She started as a laboratory researcher in the area of new molecular biomarkers, but soon moved into project management. After 2 years as a project coordinator in research & development programs in their early phases at SkylineDx.
Alba returned to Barcelona and joined the Nanomedicine Lab in August 2024 as its Project Manager. Her role will be the development of detailed project proposals, plans, the management and coordination of complex interdisciplinary tasks, their reflection on budgets and project timelines, the coordination of multiple stakeholders (including comms and various media platforms) and the ability to collaborate with researchers and academics around the world.
